Arrival at thyssenkrupp

On February 12, we took the train from Munich to Essen to attend the Beyond Conventions at Thyssenkrupp.

Arriving early, we got right to work testing the demos and creating a screen capture of the application right on the spot to present a representative demonstration of our potential solution.

You don’t realize the size of the Thyssenkrupp site until you’re there. The story behind is also fascinating. If you want to know more about it, you can read on the company website or on Wikipedia how the group and the families behind it have managed to make the company grow so much.

Beyond Conventions Event

Our presentations at various corporates went very well. The demos with the VR glasses and the Microsoft Hololens were also very well received. Nevertheless, we didn’t expect to make it to the finalists among so many applicants, especially since many of the startups were there with entire teams. So we packed up and slowly prepared for the announcement of the winners and for the departure.

We got the pitch!

Shortly before we were about to go to the participants to say goodbye, the name COEZBAY sounded through the speakers and it looked like our presentation had found the approval of more people than initially thought.

We won the pitch at Open Grid Europe GmbH for the Augmented Reality Supports Pipeline Construction challenge and shortly after we were called again to accept the award as one of the top 3 startups, which was a great honor considering the high number of participants.

First stress tests

Back in Munich, we immediately started to work on the demo we had been working on and equipped it with larger CAD data in order to expand the stress test and to make good use of the time until the negotiations. An excerpt from the demo can be found directly below.

We are growing!

In the meantime, a friend of ours just joined our team, Frederik Steinmetz, with whom we had already worked in the past. Having not worked in augmented and virtual reality before, he got an entertaining introduction to it in the home office.

Immediately afterwards, we also started a small hackathon among friends.

Off to Gescher

And soon we were off to Gescher, to our new customer, Open Grid Europe GmbH, where we tested our solution on site, geodata-supported and under almost real circumstances.

Actually, we had reserved a small car for the journey. But due to the lack of vehicles, we got an upgrade to a slightly larger vehicle. At this point a big thank you to Sixt.

Hotel und letzte Tests

Before that, of course, we did some tests in the hotel, for which the hotel room and hotel foyer at the late hour was downright offered. This must have looked funny for the employees as well as for the visitors of the hotel.

Gescher Sightseeing

After completing the tasks, we used the time for some sightseeing and visited the bell museum, for which Gescher is famous among other things.

Die Phase 1 unseres MVP’s (Minimum Viable Product) war abgeschlossen und die finale Präsentation verlief zufriedenstellend.

Through the cooperation with Open Grid Europe GmbH, we have learned a lot. Starting with the planning, to the implementation, to the presentation to larger corporations. At the corporate level, many things are handled differently than with startups and medium-sized businesses.

We hope to continue our cooperation in the future and would like to express our sincere thanks to the competent team at Open Grid Europe GmbH.

Our task was to make the underground rooms virtually accessible for various applications. Radioactivity and the life-threatening environment, made us use laser scan data to create the virtual scenes. We optimized the data and prepared it for real-time use. Then we started the programming work, which was simultaneously accompanied by the visual experience.

Real-time exposure posed a particular challenge because it is usually very dark underground. For this reason, we used a lot of artificial real-time lighting, which we have individually adapted to each room. We also adjusted many textures to reflect the realism of the scenery.

We realized this project in cooperation with the Team of BGE and Greenpost GmbH. While we took care of the content, it was the task of Greenpost GmbH to program the hardware solution and the interfaces.

Just like airplanes, copters should also carry position lights and collision warning lights during a Drone flight at night. Or in other words this is what you need for a Drone flight at night with the right light:

Red light that shines unobstructed from just ahead to the left over an angle of 110 degrees up and down;

Green light that shines unobstructed from directly ahead to the right over an angle of 110 degrees up and down;

White light that shines unobstructed from just behind to the left and to the right. Over an angle of 70 degrees up and down.

The position lamps may be either continuous or flashing and shall have a prescribed intensity.
The red and green light must be at least 5 candelas and the white tail light at least 3 candelas. The legal requirements for position and collision warning lights can be found at the DSF “German Air Traffic Control“.

360° video technology is impressive. It lacks the ability to move physically in the virtual world. Photogrammetry gives us the possibility to visualize real places in 3D. For instance to visualize an office or to digitalize a warehouse. In other words, you can create an image of reality.

What is Photogrammetry?
Photogrammetry is a group of measuring and evaluation methods. Remote sensing to determine the spatial position or 3d shape of an object from photographs and precise measurement images.

Cagatay Oezbay, https://www.coezbay.com founder of COEZBAY GMBH and consultant in the areas of Virtual-Reality and Real-Time Applications, will demonstrate the latest camera for stereoscopic 360-degree shots.

A standard 360 video is just a flat equirectangular video. Displayed on a sphere you can look around inside. Think of it like the face of a world map on a globe, but with VR your head is on the inside of the globe looking at the inner surface. As you move, the head tracking on your device moves with you, giving you that feeling like you are inside the scene.

However Stereoscopic 3D can add another level of immersion by adding depth data between the foreground and background. Your favorite 3D blockbuster movies usually shot with 2 lenses side by side. This way, each eye gets a different angle of view when watching. Like any production, this can look strange if poorly implemented, or absolutely amazing if done right.

With stereoscopic 3D in VR, that depth information has to be overlaid and mapped to sphere. Because of parallax between cameras, this can be challenging. Any minor flaws or “stitch seams” in the footage are magnified in 3D, and sometimes anomalies occur in different places per eye – which makes it uncomfortable to watch. Therefore Cagatay Oezbay will and can show you different HowTo’s to avoid the most common issues.

At this point it should also be mentioned that we were very impressed with the interior design of the BurdaStudios. The choice of murals was extremely creative and we also liked the impressive wooden wall right in the entrance area.

The physical well-being was also taken care of. Therefore both great sandwiches and drinks for every taste. As it is for Bavaria, good beer is also a must. Even though we personally abstained from drinking alcohol and unfortunately arrived with a full stomach.

All in all it was an extremely successful event. We especially liked the networking component. We were able to meet many old friends from the industry and got to know many new faces. Of course we are looking forward to the next event.

As a Bavarian company, it is a particular pleasure for us to realize projects in Bavaria. Starting with the magnificent mountains, the beautiful rivers and the wonderful lakes. This time we have realized this for ourselves free of charge. Not quite true. One drone (the DJI Mavic Pro) fell by the wayside. Nevertheless it was an action-packed tour with lots of fun and joy.

The Bavarian Sunrise Tour was a successful change. We thank our team member Michael Radeck for this idea and for his commitment. We learned a lot about drone technologies, weather and safety precautions when working with drones.

The Samsung Gear 360 is the first 360 degree camera by Samsung Electronics. It was released as a part of the Samsung Gear family of devices. It uses two cameras to take 360° photos and videos.

There are two models:
The original model released in 2016, the SM-C200, a sphere.
The updated model released in 2017, the SM-R210, a smaller sphere with integral handle.

It is important to mention that special permission is required for recording with a vehicle and in road traffic. Especially if you want to do this in active road traffic.

This is of course due to the privacy policy. But above all because of the safety in road traffic.

Usually it is best to involve the police and the relevant authorities. We have realized the tests mostly on private and commercial properties.

After we used some 3D scans to realistically display real-time scenes in various game engines, we looked for more compact laser scanners. And we found what we were looking for. Leica provided us with a suitable product with which we can test our requirements.

A laser scanner can be based on many different technologies, each with its own limitations, advantages and costs. Of course, restrictions regarding the type of objects must be observed. For example, optical technology may encounter many difficulties with shiny, reflective or transparent objects. For example, you can use industrial computed tomography scanners and structured-light laser scanners to construct digital 3D models, without destructive testing.

Collected 3D data is useful for a wide variety of applications. Such laser scanners commonly used in the architecture and construction industry. Our unconventional application has found a hearing in this case and it is a special pleasure for us to share this with you.

All in all, this test contributed greatly to our purchase decision. It is one of the cheaper laser scanners with a price of about 15.000,00 EUR on the market. Considering the performance it is a good investment.
